Double Kraken

Hello and Merry Christmas!  I started my NHL Double Series in May of 2016, back when the NHL only had 30 teams.  Now there are 32 teams of course, and I've finally completed the last remaining team!

My Ideal Seattle Kraken
I think the Seattle Kraken have a great set of jerseys, so the changes I made for my "Ideal" set are minor.  I flipped the order of the hem stripes on the road jersey, and I also slightly thickened the red stripe throughout.

New Look Seattle Kraken
Kraken lurk in the deep depth of the sea, so I went with a wave design that transitions from their "Shadow Blue" to their "Deep Sea Blue".  The TV numbers replaced their anchor/space-needle logo on the shoulders, so I added that logo to the pants and helmets.

So that's the last team of this series, but I'm not quite done yet.  I'm working on some updates for a few of the teams, and I have a couple of unused designs to share as well.  See you in 2022!

Double Canadiens

Hello folks!

My Ideal Montreal Canadiens
I didn't make any major changes for my ideal Canadiens set, only recolouring the collars and switching to a single outline for the numbers on the road jersey.  I know some people want the Canadiens to match their white jersey to the red, but I don't think they should.

New Look Montreal Canadiens
This concept takes inspiration from the Canadiens' 1911-12 sweater which featured a diagonal sash, but I simplified the stripes down to only one colour.  I also used a darker shade of blue, and a rounded font for the numbers.  The pant stripe features 24 Canadiens logos, one for each of their Stanley Cup victories (using the era-appropriate logo for each championship).

That's all for now!

Double Red Wings

Hello!

My Ideal Detroit Red Wings
The only change I made here is a slight tweak to the road jersey's collar.  I see no reason to mess with the Red Wings classic look.

New Look Detroit Red Wings
For my "New Look" concept I decided to go with a fauxback design.  The striping pattern is the same on each jersey, with just the base colour changing (their current jerseys do this as well).  I also went with a darker shade of red, a vintage version of their winged-wheel logo, plus canvas and leather coloured pants and gloves.

See you later, and happy Thanksgiving weekend to all my fellow Canadians!

Double Capitals

Welcome back again!

My Ideal Washington Capitals
This is a pretty common idea for Capitals concepts, the Weagle on a modernized version of their original jerseys.  I kept their current name and number fonts, and added some stars as a hanger effect.

New Look Washington Capitals
For this concept my inspiration was the Capitals original set of pants.  Blue becomes the main colour (it just worked better that way), and I used their current third jersey logo as the crest.  This design would probably work better for an all-star game, but I wanted to try it here anyways.

Thanks for stopping by!

Double Blue Jackets

 Hello again!

My Ideal Columbus Blue Jackets
I quite like the design of the original Blue Jackets jerseys, so I went in that direction for my "Ideal" set.  I kept their current primary logo and fonts, but went back to their oval/hat logo on the shoulders (I don't like the cannon logo).

New Look Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets were cowards and kept Stinger off of their Reverse Retro jersey.  For this concept I put him front and center.  I went with a double blue colour scheme for the jerseys when I noticed Stingers' uniform (hat and collar) use those colours.

See you next time!

Double Rangers

Good evening!

My Ideal New York Rangers
The Rangers have a classic set of jerseys, so the only change I made was removing the red from their collars.

New Look New York Rangers
Here I wanted to try a modern version of the Rangers lady liberty jerseys.  I simplified the logo outlines, and dropped silver from the colour scheme by replacing it with seafoam green.  I also went with two sets of pants, as I felt navy pants worked better with the road jersey.

Goodnight!

Double Coyotes

Happy Labour Day!

My Ideal Arizona Coyotes
I'm glad the Coyotes are returning to their Kachina jerseys, but I think they could be even better with some updates.  Here I kept their simpler (soon to be former) colour scheme, ditched the yokes, and used the Kachina coyote head as the primary logo.

New Look Arizona Coyotes
My next idea for the Coyotes was to try using their Kachina pattern both as a chest stripe and a sublimated pattern making up the base of the jerseys.  I then chose their paw-print logo as the primary, and used a different set of equipment for the home and road uniforms.

Thoughts?

Double Flames

Hello folks!  After a much shorter break than last time, I'm back with another duo of concepts for my NHL Double Series...

My Ideal Calgary Flames
In the past my ideal look for the Flames would have been based off of their 2003-07 set, but now that they've returned to their vintage set I don't think they should ditch them (although they should extend the home's hem stripe to the bottom of the jersey).

New Look Calgary Flames
The original idea for this concept was much different from the end result, with the dark red base being the only feature I kept from the first attempt.  I ended up using blasty as the primary logo, which resulted in me using a second brighter shade of red as an accent colour.

Thanks for visiting!

Double Islanders

Welcome back!  It's been a while since my last post, and a long time (more than a year) since I created any concepts for my NHL Double Series (which I started more than five years ago now)!

My Ideal New York Islanders
These jerseys are a return to the Islanders set they wore while winning four Stanley Cups.  The road jersey is identical to their current design except for the collar, but the home jersey uses a different striping pattern that I've always preferred.

New Look New York Islanders
The four stripe motif is overused when making Islanders concepts, but I decided to embrace it anyway.  I placed the four stripes front and center on a chest-stripe, while the actual logo is relegated to the shoulders (similar in concept to the Canucks' flying-V jerseys).  I also added four stripes to each of the numbers on the back.

Sorry again for the long gap between posts.  It's mostly due to a lack of ideas, but I also got a new puppy in early May so I've been spending lots of my free time with her.

She's a four month old yellow lab named Juno, she's really smart (she'll do anything for a treat) and also very energetic (I had forgotten how much work puppies are).

Lastly, I received my second Covid-19 Vaccination yesterday, and I just want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all the scientists, health care workers, and everyone else involved in this vaccination process.

That's all for now!

Vipers inspired Red Wings Reverse Retro

Detroit Red Wings
Gordie Howe played for both the Detroit Red Wings (1687 games) and the Detroit Vipers (one shift), so I based this Red Wings Reverse Retro concept off of the Vipers jerseys he wore for that game.  For the logo I chose the modernized D from Detroit's 2016 Stadium Series jersey.

See you in May!

Cougars inspired Blackhawks Reverse Retro

Chicago Blackhawks
I based this Blackhawks Reverse Retro concept off of the jerseys worn by the WHA's Chicago Cougars, even though some of the charm is lost without the yellow and green colour scheme.  I did keep the Cougars unique front number placement though, and I chose the Blackhawks alternate logo as the front crest.

Happy Friday!

Americans inspired Rangers Reverse Retro

Welcome back to another late night concept post!

New York Rangers
This concept was especially enjoyable to make, a Rangers Reverse Retro design in the style of the New York Americans' 1926-27 jersey (which happens to be the same year the Rangers debuted).  I tried to match the name and number fonts to those on the aforementioned Americans jersey, and I added a star to the tan pants as an experiment.

See you next week!

Jersey Devils (EHL) inspired Devils Reverse Retro

New concept time!

New Jersey Devils
This jersey concept for the New Jersey Devils is based off of the old jerseys worn by the Jersey Devils of the Eastern Hockey League.  I reversed the colours by swapping black and white, and I also recoloured the Devils logo.

Thanks for visiting!

Millionaires inspired Canucks Reverse Retro

Good evening everybody!

Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks could really use green jersey in their arsenal, so I did a Reverse Retro of the Vancouver Millionaires' jersey in green and navy.  It was either going to be this or a WHL Canucks inspired concept.

Goodnight!

Bisons inspired Sabres Reverse Retro

Buffalo Sabres
I'd love to see the Sabres try another yellow jersey, here is one based off of the old Buffalo Bisons of the AHL.  I went with white numbers to better match the Bisons' jerseys, but I'm now thinking blue numbers would have been the better option.

Any thoughts?

Golden Seals inspired Sharks Reverse Retro

San Jose Sharks
I've seen many Sharks concepts based off of the California Golden Seals, this here is my version.  As you can see, I chose white as the base colour (with teal and black stripes), and used the Sharks original logo as the front crest.  The striping pattern follows the Golden Seals 1974-76 jerseys as accurately as I could.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

Roadrunners inspired Coyotes Reverse Retro

Arizona Coyotes
The latest concept in my "Reverse Retros inspired by Past Franchises" series is this Coyotes jersey based off the 1974-75 Phoenix Roadrunners.  I chose "Desert Sand" as the base colour, and went with the logos from the Coyotes Kachina set.  You'll notice the sock stripes don't match the jersey, they didn't on the Roadrunners original white jersey either.

That's all for now!

March 05, 2021

Pirates inspired Penguins Reverse Retro

Pittsburgh Penguins
I based this Penguins Reverse Retro concept off of the Pittsburgh Pirates 1925-28 jerseys, but I could have chosen any of the three jerseys that NHL team wore.  I decided to use yellow pants mostly as an experiment, and also because I thought it might add to the vintage look.

See you later!

February 26, 2021

Wanderers inspired Canadiens Reverse Retro

Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Wanderers only played four games in the NHL, but that didn't stop me from using them as inspiration for this Canadiens Reverse Retro concept.  The jersey uses the Canadiens red and blue (instead of the Wanderers white and red), and the logo combines the Canadiens "CH" with the Wanderers shield.

Enjoy your weekend!

February 19, 2021

Quakers inspired Flyers Reverse Retro

Philadelphia Flyers
This was the obvious Flyers concept for this series, a Philadelphia Quakers jersey with orange and black reversed and the Flyers logo on the front.  The arms would probably look better with fewer stripes, but I wanted to keep it accurate to the original.

Thanks for visiting, and enjoy the outdoor NHL games this weekend!

February 12, 2021

Barons inspired Blue Jackets Reverse Retro

Columbus Blue Jackets
The Cleveland Barons were the NHL's first team from Ohio, so I based this Blue Jackets Reverse Retro concept off of their jerseys.  For the primary colour I choose the "Steel Blue" from Columbus' third jersey (also using the cannon logo from that jersey), and I made sure to include the Barons' Ohio state outline behind the sleeve numbers.

Have a nice day!

Americans inspired Islanders Reverse Retro

New York Islanders
This is my take on an Islanders Reverse Retro based off of the Brooklyn Americans' 1941-42 jersey.  Orange becomes the primary colour instead of white (I also swapped red for blue, and blue for white), while I used the Islanders alternate "NY" logo as the crest.  The socks are actually from the Americans' 1925-26 set.

Thanks for stopping by!

Rockies inspired Avalanche Reverse Retro

Colorado Avalanche
I love the Avalanche's Quebec Nordiques inspired Reverse Retro, but for this series I chose to base my concept off of the Colorado Rockies instead.

January 22, 2021

Nationals inspired Senators Reverse Retro

Ottawa Senators
I've always liked the mismatching striping patterns on the Ottawa Nationals' jerseys, so I brought back that design for this Senators Reverse Retro concept.  My initial plan was to use gold as the base colour, but it looked terrible so I went with silver instead.

January 15, 2021

Eagles inspired Blues Reverse Retro

The NHL is finally back, woohoo!  I'm also back with another Reverse Retro concept...

St. Louis Blues
This was a fun one to do, the Blues in the style of the short-lived St. Louis Eagles!  The base colour becomes the bright blue from the Blues third jersey, while yellow and navy replaces the Eagles red and royal blue.  The arched "Blues" script comes from their 1984-87 logo.

Have a nice weekend!

January 08, 2021

Fighting Saints inspired Wild Reverse Retro

Well 2021 hasn't gotten off to the best start, but as promised I'm back with another concept!

Minnesota Wild
Here's another Reverse Retro concept inspired by a WHA franchise, this time it's the Minnesota Wild in the style of the Fighting Saints.  I chose "wheat" as the base jersey colour since the Wild have never had a wheat jersey before, but went with a green helmet since a wheat helmet wouldn't look as good (in my opinion).

My next concept will also be a Reverse Retro, but it will be inspired by a past NHL franchise instead of a WHA franchise.

January 01, 2021

Cowboys inspired Flames Reverse Retro

Happy New Years everybody!  I'm excited for this year for two reasons, first of all it's not 2020 anymore (finally), and also because I have some new concepts on the way!  More on that below...

Calgary Flames
Here we have a reverse retro style Flames concept based off of the Calgary Cowboys of the WHA.  The only changes are yellow replacing white, and the Flames logo replacing the Cowboys' old cowboy-hat.

In the coming weeks you'll see more reverse retro concepts like this inspired by past franchises.  I really like what the NHL did with the Reverse Retro program, and I wanted to make my own concepts but the inspiration wasn't coming.  So I added a twist that the concepts had to be inspired by past franchises, and the result is this series.  I don't know yet if I'll make a concept for every team, but it will be more than half for sure.

Also, you may have noticed that I slightly tweaked the look of the blog with a new wordmark logo up top!  I figured now was a good time for a refresh.

Thanks for visiting, and I hope you all have a happy and healthy 2021!
